One day each fall, T.H.E. is transformed into a living laboratory as 18-20 working `scientists' (including biologists, geologists, biologists, herpetologists, aquatic scientists, psychologists, engineers, you name it) take over the classrooms and teach groups of 3rd through 5th graders about their specialties. We are interested in having our presenters talk about how they got to be scientists, what path took them to careers in science, their inspiration to choose science as a career, what they do during the day, how they feel their work contributes to society, etc. The goal is to get the students excited about choosing a career as a scientist, not just about the particular subject matter.
It takes a Village.
In years past, each scientist has been assigned to a host room. Each scientist is asked to make two 45-50 minute presentations of the same information to two different groups of kids. All the students have an option to review a short biography and summary of the presentation topics prior to the day, and each session includes approximately 20 students.
Interactive presentations have been huge successes! We've had everything from presentations about RNA research and potential cures for cancer, white dwarf stars, chances to observe live snakes, tesla coil electricity demonstrations, heart rate monitoring and electrocardiograms, rainwater demonstrations on permeable and impermeable surfaces, and many other exciting presentations.
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers and parents to help guide scientists to the kick-off presentation in the gym, the welcome coffee, class sessions, and appreciation lunch in the library. Help us build our Scientists for the future at T.H.E.!
